45. Adhira

After few months

The sterilizing, metallic scent of the high-risk obstetric wing clung heavily to the air, suffocating in its sharpness. Neon strip lighting overhead hummed with a quiet, relentless vibration, casting a clinical glare over the polished marble floor of Private Delivery Suite 4.

Outside, a late-summer rainstorm lashed violently against the reinforced glass windows, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with a far more terrifying storm.

For Aadhya, the last forty-eight hours had dissolved into a nightmare of mounting agony. Her body, already pushed to the absolute brink after nine grueling months of severe physical strain, had finally given out under the relentless assault of early labor contractions. The physical load of the pregnancy-compounded by acute lower back spasms, unrelenting pelvic pressure, and sudden spikes in blood pressure-had transformed what should have been a sacred, quiet arrival into a terrifying medical emergency.

She was propped up on the mechanical delivery bed, her small frame swallowed whole by the stark white hospital linens. Her skin was ghastly pale, slick with a thick layer of cold sweat, and her knuckles were white as she clutched the side rails of the bed. Her abdomen rolled with another violent wave of uterine muscle contractions, ripping a raw, blood-curdling scream straight from her chest.

"Aadhya! Look at me, sweetheart! Look at me-breathe!"

Reyansh was completely on his knees beside her bed. The stoic, impeccably composed man who commanded boardrooms with an icy, unshakable calm was gone. His crisp charcoal suit jacket had been tossed blindly onto a chair hours ago; his white silk shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, rumpled, and soaked through at the chest with Aadhya's sweat and tears. His hair was disheveled where his shaking hands had pushed it back in sheer terror.

His hands-usually so steady, so protective-were trembling uncontrollably as he cupped her face. He didn't care about the monitors flashing red above them, nor the urgent, low whispers of the head obstetrician and her team preparing the medical tray at the foot of the bed. All he cared about, all he saw, was his wife breaking into pieces right in front of him.

"I-I can't, Reyansh... I can't... please!" Aadhya gasped out, her voice shattered, barely recognizable. A fresh wave of agonizing pressure radiated down her hips, shooting through her lower spine like white-hot iron. She thrashed her head back into the pillow, her mouth open in a soundless cry of sheer agony before another sob burst through her lips. "It's ripping me apart... Reyansh, it hurts too much!"

"I know, my life, I know... I'm so sorry, I'm right here," Reyansh choked out, his own voice cracking as tears spilled over his eyelashes, tracing warm paths down his flushed cheeks.

He lifted his broad hand and pressed his forehead against hers, taking her right hand into his and interlacing their fingers with a desperate, crushing grip. He could feel the violent tremors coursing through her entire body.

"Take a breath with me, Aadhya," he pleaded, his voice thick with raw, unadulterated grief as he watched her fight through the pain. "Please, baby... suck in the air. Give it to me... put the pain on me. God, just let me take it from you!"

"I'm scared... I'm so scared, Reyansh!" she sobbed, tears flowing continuously, pooling in the hollows of her collarbones. The physical exhaustion had stripped away every layer of her composure. She wasn't just crying from the intense, unrelenting physical tearing of her body; she was crying from the terrifying vulnerability of it all, the phantom grief of her late parents, and the suffocating fear that her body would fail her when her daughter needed her most. "What if I can't bring her out?! What if I'm not strong enough?!"

Hearing those words-hearing the woman he loved more than his own life question her own strength while she was giving everything she had- ripped Reyansh's heart straight out of his chest.

He couldn't hold back the storm inside him any longer. The powerful, protective husband broke down right beside her bed.

Reyansh buried her face into the soft crook of his neck, his broad shoulders heaving violently as deep, choked sobs escaped his throat. Tears soaked into her hospital gown as he kissed the side of her slick, trembling throat over and over again, holding her close, trying with every ounce of his soul to anchor her to safety.

"Don't say that... don't ever say that, Aadhya," Reyansh wept against her skin, his hands moving up to gently frame her face once more. He pulled back just enough to look into her pain-filled, tear-stained eyes, his own eyes bloodshot and overflowing with boundless devotion. "Look at me. Look at your husband. You are the strongest person in this entire world. You have carried our child through fire... you are fighting for her right now."

He leaned in, kissing her forehead, her eyelids, her damp cheeks, his tears mingling with hers on her skin.

"I am right here with you, Aadhya," he whispered fiercely, his voice vibrating with absolute promise. "If you sink, I am sinking with you. You don't have to be strong alone anymore. Hold onto me. Crush my hand, break my bones, do whatever you need to do-just don't let go of me!"

"Mr. Rathore, the baby's heart rate is dropping slightly during contractions-we need the final push now!" the doctor instructed firmly, her tone leaving no room for hesitation. "Aadhya, listen to my voice. On the next contraction, I need everything you have left. Push!"

The monitor beside the bed emitted a sharp, rhythmic beep that cut through the room like a siren.

Aadhya gasped for air, her chest rising frantically. Another contraction hit-massive, continuous, and excruciating. It felt as though her lower body was being pulled apart at the seams.

"Reyansh!" she screamed out, her hand tightening around his with a force that turned his knuckles completely white.

"I've got you! I'm holding you!" Reyansh yelled back through his tears, wrapping his left arm securely around her upper back to support her, lifting her gently as she channeled every remaining ounce of her soul, her strength, and her love into the final effort.

"Push, Aadhya! You're right there!" the doctor called out.

Aadhya shut her eyes, her teeth grinding together as a guttural, desperate cry escaped her lips. Sweat poured down her face, tears streaked her skin, and every muscle in her body trembled under the extreme, unimaginable physical strain.

Reyansh kept his gaze fixed entirely on her face, kissing her temple, leaning his head against hers, crying freely as he murmured a steady stream of love into her ear: "That's it, my love... give her to us... you're doing it... I love you, I love you so much..."

And then-with one final, agonizing effort that drained every drop of energy from Aadhya's body-the unbearable pressure suddenly collapsed into a profound, weightless release.

A split second of dead, terrifying silence filled the room.

Then, breaking through the storm outside and the sharp hum of the medical monitors, a loud, sharp, magnificent cry echoed through the suite.

Waaaah! Waaaah!

The high-pitched, vibrant sound of a newborn baby girl taking her very first breath of air shattered the heavy atmosphere.

Aadhya's body fell back onto the pillows, her chest heaving as she panted heavily, her strength entirely gone.

Reyansh froze. His head snapped toward the foot of the bed, his tears momentarily drying on his flushed cheeks as his breath hitched in his throat.

"It's a girl! A beautiful, healthy baby girl!" the doctor announced with a joyful smile, quickly clearing the baby's airway and wrapping the crying infant in a sterile, warm pink towel.

The moment the words registered, Reyansh let out a ragged, choked sound-halfway between a sob and a breathless laugh. He covered his mouth with his trembling hand, his eyes wide as fresh tears flooded down his cheeks.

The nurse carefully stepped over and laid the tiny, warm bundle directly onto Aadhya's bare chest.

The sudden warmth of the baby resting against her skin brought Aadhya back from the edge of total physical collapse.

She slowly opened her heavy, exhausted eyes. Looking down, her vision cleared through a fog of tears to see a tiny, perfect creature wriggling against her heart. The baby girl had soft, delicate features, rosy pink skin, a small head covered in fine dark hair, and tiny little hands that were opening and closing against her mother's gown.

"Oh... oh god..." Aadhya wept softly, her shaky, pale fingers gently reaching up to touch the baby's velvety cheek. All the excruciating pain, the terrifying hours of labor, the tears, and the severe physical breakdown vanished instantly, replaced by a wave of pure, divine love so vast it filled every corner of her soul. "My baby... my sweet girl..."

Reyansh leaned down over both of them, his broad frame creating a protective shield around his wife and newborn child.

His eyes were completely overflowing with tears as he looked at the tiny face of his daughter. The newborn let out a quiet, fluttering whimpering sound, and instinctively, her tiny fist reached out, her delicate fingers wrapping around Reyansh's thumb, which was resting near Aadhya's shoulder.

The moment that tiny, feather-light grip closed around his finger, Reyansh lost control completely. He lowered his head, pressing his lips gently against his daughter's soft forehead, his body shaking with deep, overwhelming emotional sobs.

"You did it, my love... you brought our princess to us," Reyansh wept softly, shifting his lips from his daughter's forehead to press a long, desperate, tender kiss onto Aadhya's trembling lips.

He stayed there, resting his forehead against Aadhya's, their tears mingling once again on their cheeks-but this time, they were tears of infinite gratitude, relief, and peace.

"Thank you, Aadhya," Reyansh whispered, his voice rich with profound love as he stroked his wife's hair with one hand and kept his thumb anchored in his daughter's tiny grip with the other. "Thank you for being so brave. Thank you for giving me our daughter. I love you... I love both of you more than my life."

Aadhya smiled weakly through her tears, looking up into her husband's eyes. "She's safe now, Reyansh. We made it."

"We made it," Reyansh repeated softly, kissing her cheek, her forehead, and her lips once more.

"Our little Adhira" Aadhya said.

"Yes Adhira Reyansh Singh Rathore."

Outside, the storm continued to rain against the glass, but inside the quiet room, wrapped tightly in each other's arms with their newborn daughter resting against their hearts, the long, painful storm of their past had finally given way to the brightest dawn of their lives.

And they named her Adhira
